THE WARRIOR TRILOGY

Olivia Larson

The Warrior I

Half a score has passed since woman turned warrior,

Taking up a shining shield and sparkling sword.

One by one her enemies lined up, just to fall.

She fought for many years, always getting stronger,

Fighting back against the threats to Earth’s green mother.

Standing up with her fellow knights in the pink dawn.

POLAR BEAR

My mom always told me I was her little polar bear cub

I didn’t understand, until I had grown up

And when I would get mad, or start to throw a fuss

It would take some days, for me to feel enough

Winter quickly turns to spring,

and this cub could become a king

Kind words had turn to energy

And roars that they’d remember me

But polar bears are delicate,

And Words can turn to bullets

That slowly melt the ice away

And again, I’m left to sink.

THE LITTLE PRINCE AS TOLD BY A PILOT-IN-THEORY

Tobi Park

The Little Prince is a strange boy who never answers questions, with hair as gold
as wheat fields, and a penchant for youthful wisdom. He lives on Asteroid B-612, with two active volcanoes to heat his breakfast, and one extinct one to use as a footstool. One day, as he weeds the baobab saplings from the rock, he discovers a rose. He cultivates it, and as she grows more beautiful, she becomes more demanding, coquettish. The Prince’s love for her tinges with anxiety. It complexifies. So, he escapes via bird migra- tion. After his meanderings to other planets, he lands in the Sahara Desert, where he meets the Pilot.

IN CASE OF AN IMPERFECT KOREAN AMERICAN: JUMP

I’ve always preferred Korean food. Something about the ratio of salt to sweet fills me with a fullness that American food never can. And that doesn’t exactly make sense for two reasons. One, I was born in America, and two, my family is incredibly Americanized.1

FOR THE BOY OF HOLLOW BONES AND AN AVIAN HEART

Tobi Park

       I. i have nothing to Give.

i look into the shadows of a room darkened by 4 am and i’m almost sure that i can see your smile silhouetted on my hanging clothes. Grey and long, the shadows on the floor spin themselves skeletal along the wood floor-panels. i don’t remember your voice but i can feel your name, stale and ash on my diaphragm, crumbling off my throat.

       Drip,

              drop,

When it seeps through my voice, my teeth unclasp. my fingertips are empty porcelain.

the wall phone echoes through the house. As James approaches, he squints to see the name on the tiny glowing screen. He reaches out, grabbing the phone and pulling it to his right ear.

MY GIRLFRIEND, THE NARCISSIST

Natascha Graham

She’s called Gillian. She’s got brown hair, and eyes the colour of a bleached winter sky.

       She’s about 5’5, but she’s tough.

My girlfriend was a narcissist. She didn’t like me having friends, or seeing family.

The blood wrote and it refused to be objective. Blood was fascinated with redness. Blood in the eye did most of the speaking. Blood in body responded to the eye. Blood in brain produced ideas. Blood in hands performed. Fear and boredom infiltrated the blood cells. Blood responded by producing antibodies. Fear became passion to reproduce and boredom the impetus to write. Ideas reproduced themselves and words reproduced ideas.
